Women Portrayed in the Media

In the media today, women are portrayed in numerous ways. Some of the ways may be positive, while others can be negative. They range from different types of media such as television to magazines. They can be portrayed through different body types, food, fashion, and fame.

There are all types of women out there, but the media focus more on one particular type. This type being, the super skinny, pretty face, beautiful hair, nice clothes and amazing shoes. These types of women are usually found in all different types of fashion magazines. These magazines are mostly bought by teen girls who are probably very insecure. Seeing these types of girls all over magazines would put the thought in their mind, that if you want to be pretty like the girl in the magazine, you must look just like her! Unfortunately, most teen girls do not know that the girls in the magazine go through a large amount of photo editing and touch-ups to look like that. So basically, “the look” is unrealistic, fake and unattainable.

Similarly, there are so many shows in the media today that portray larger sized women as being ugly and un-attractive. They show them as being a loser and having no friends, and being the person everyone else likes to pick on. These types of shows are definitely sending the wrong message to all their viewers. I find it really mean and unfair that they portray larger women in that way. To some people, watching a show portraying women like that might make it seem like its okay for them to treat women in that way as well. I really don’t think the media should be putting out such a negative message about larger women out there like that.

On the other hand, in some television shows, they show a much more variety of all the different types of women. Like on New Girl, they portray the main character, Jess, as being a really pretty, shy, geeky and super funny girl. I find this show to be very amusing and entertaining. It shows a different and more realistic side of women to young girls. The main character is always her own self and doesn’t change anything about her. I think this show would catch the interest of most teen girls because it shows them that they don’t have to be like the girls they see in magazines. They can love and be their very own self.

In the media today, women can be seen as many different things. Some of which are negative, and some of which are positive. In my opinion, I think the more positive and realistic way women are portrayed should be the only way they are portrayed.

My Dram Media Related Job

In our world, there are numerous jobs that protein to the media. They range from many different things in the world today. If I had to pick my dream media related job, I would say Fashion Journalist. Why?! Well, to start off, I am really interested in the world of fashion and how it is always changing and evolving. Keeping up-to-date with the latest fashion trends can be hard and difficult for others, but I think that I can quickly pick up the latest fashion trends with ease.  I have actually been to Fashion Week here in Toronto and even in New York. When I was there, I could see a lot of the journalists sitting near the front and just thinking, “If I were a fashion journalist, I would totally be going to every fashion show all over the world!”  It was so much fun at both, that I couldn’t wait to go to another one. Unfortunately, fashion week isn’t being held when school is off, so I can’t really skip school just to go to a fashion show.

Being a fashion journalist would be so much fun for me. I really enjoy learning about fashion and even helping out others with it. Experimenting with different styles and types of clothing is fun for me, and I really enjoy it. I watch a whole lot of fashion shows on TV such as What Not to Wear, Project Runway, America’s Next Top Model and many more. These shows are great at giving their viewers tips and tricks in keeping up-to-date with the latest. Furthermore, I also enjoy writing a lot. I really like writing down my opinions and letting all my thoughts out. Expressing myself in writing isn’t hard for me, I just write down whatever I’m thinking. I love fashion and writing, so a fashion journalist would be a great combination of the two and a great job for me.

If I were to become a fashion journalist, I think I would do a really great job at it. Pretty much what a fashion journalist does is got out to fashion shows, or just around the country, looking for what they think could be or is the latest fashion trend. After their  “research” at fashion shows and what not is done, they begin to write about it, telling everyone their opinion,  adding pictures of the fashion show, maybe even celebrities wearing whatever it is, and then concluding with where they think this trend will go from there. Finally after all their work is done, they get it sent to the magazine’s editor who checks it over, gives them feedback, and when everything is done, it gets printed in a magazine for the world to see!  I think that this job would be both fun and exciting. I would be able to go to fashion shows and let everyone know what I think the latest fashion trend is. I really think that being a fashion journalist would be a great job for me.

Media that has affected my outlook on life. (TV show)

On twitter, my friend tweeted about her new found obsession with a show called “The buried Life.” The show is a reality documentary series that follows the journey of four boys from British Columbia trying to complete their bucket list of ‘100 things to do before you die.’ But it doesn’t stop there. They say, every time they cross something off their list, they help a well-deserved stranger cross something of their own. For example, on one episode, after the boys attended a party at the Play-Boy mansion, they re-united a father with his son.

I had actually already watched the show before and had become hooked. I stopped watching it because it stopped airing on MTV after its second season. Everyone said that it was canceled, but apparently the creator of the show said that they were currently working on a "new and improved" show for the network based on the original series. I don’t really know exactly what the creator is trying to do here because he has the views dying to see what the boys do next, because they still haven’t completed everything.

My opinion of the show is obviously that it’s very good. When I first watched the show, it actually really got me excited to someday got out into the world and fulfill my wildest dreams! It also even got me thinking about others too though. In the show, like I said before, the boys always help a deserving stranger cross something off their own list of ‘things to do before I die.’ It got me thinking that there are so many people in the world with things that they really want to do before they die, and how their things aren’t anything crazy. What they usually want is something that is both heartfelt and very heart-warming.

In my opinion, I think that if any of you haven’t watch the show yet, I highly recommend you watch it. I think that it will really get you thinking about what you actually want out of your life and it will actually get you thinking. Once you've thought long and hard, you can start planning for your future and then finally, fulfilling whatever it is that you want to do.

NEWS NEWS NEWS! READ ALL ABOUT IT!

The importance of news plays a big part in our day to day life. The news keeps each and every one aware and informed about the world around us. By being informed and aware, keeps people alert and helps them build upon their own opinions and feelings. The news is a great way for people to learn about things that they may not about, or to further their knowledge.

There are many different sources and types of news. Some of the sources are, newspapers/magazines, TV news channels, online newspapers, social networks, and radio stations. The benefits of receiving news from any form of a newspaper are that they have many different articles that explain the event in detail. If the article is a very important one, reading the first paragraph gives you most of the important information and you will already know more then you did before. The newspaper are has pictures related to the articles which give you a nice visual. With a newspaper, there is usually a section for World News. In this particular section, you can briefly learn about things happing all around the world as well. The downside to the newspaper is that when you receive your paper, the stories are already a day old and may be of no use to you if you had already heard about it before.

The benefits of getting your news form a TV news channel is that they has much more visuals and even videos to better inform you. An addition to the visuals, you also have a news anchor that tells you what exactly happened faster than you may read about it. On the other hand, the downside to this is that these TV channels are all in a specific schedule. Being in a schedule means that the news channel may only tell you what they think is most important. This means that you wouldn’t be fully aware of what else might be going on.

Social networks are also a good way of receiving news. On Facebook for instance, the news may be that your best friend just got a puppy, or that your English assignment is actually due on Tuesday instead of Monday. This type of news is much more relevant to your own personal life and may seem much more important to you as opposed to the rest of the world. Similarly, on Twitter, you can be easily informed about what exactly your personal friends are doing and what is going on in your personal life. BUT! Twitter, is actually much more than just personal news. You can follow whoever and whatever you want to receive news that you find important. Twitter also keeps you informed about things going on all around the world with things called “Trending Topics” (TT). These TTs are topics that people all around the world seem to be talking about, and if you don’t know exactly what it is, you can simply click a tweet, and read all about it. Twitter is a great way of receiving all kinds of news instantly. In my opinion, I think twitter is the best way of receiving news. I think this because, with twitter, you can easily just follow your local newspaper and be informed about the latest news with a simple tweet. You can also follow all kinds of different TV news channels and be informed form them. You could also, simply just change your Trending Topics options from World TTs to Local TTs.

We have numerous amounts of ways of receiving news. Each form of receiving news has both its benefits and disadvantages. By using at least one form, you will be more informed and aware of the world around you. Keeping yourself limited to personal news isn’t as informative as also keeping yourself up-to-date with everything else that is going on in the world.

The Role Internet Plays In My Life

Over the years, the internet has become a very important role in many of our lives. The internet has helped improve people’s lives in many different ways. Some of these are, providing the bridge to long distance communication, a quick and easy form of entertainment, shopping, and also gives us the answers to questions in no time!  The internet is also a great way of staying up-to-date in the latest news, gossip and even your personal life. Lastly, the internet has also become a new way of learning and even teaching.

Compared to the early days of the internet, we depend on it a whole lot more! Today, we can talk to different people from all over the world using E-mail, instant message, Skype, and lastly, the very new, Google Plus.  We can also instantly stream live television, or watch virtually any movie straight from the internet. We can also buy almost anything from online sites such as, EBay, Kijiji, and Amazon. If we ever have a question that we need an answer to, we can quickly just type it into Google and we will be given hundreds of different websites that may contain the answer.  With the internet, we can easily obtain online newspapers and magazines to keep us informed about the world around us, and also use various different social networks to keep us informed about our personal lives. The internet has even gone as far as online courses for all kinds of students to learn from.

Personally, the internet has played a very important role in my life. Being a high school student, I depend on the internet a lot. The internet often helps me answer any difficult questions I may have, allows me to research topics and ideas that I many not fully understand, It helps me keep in touch with both family and friends, and it is also a great way for me to get away from all the school stress by allowing me to play video games, watch movies or television, and even just listen to music.

The internet has also helped me with many different things. The internet came of a great value when my family was looking for a new house to move into. Looking online, we easily filled in short and simple answers on an online form to help us find exactly what we were looking for in our new house. When the form was complete, the website generated a list of hundreds of different houses that fit our criteria. After we had looked through about six or seven, we came to the perfect house, placed our bid, bought it, and moved in. The internet also helped out when we desperately needed a new car. Looking online was fast, simple and very easy. Using the internet is also a great way you can compare different prices in order to find the best deal out there. Lastly, the internet has become such an easy way of shopping! A few years ago, my family and I travelled to England to visit family. Of course my cousin and I decided to go shopping. When I got to their mall, I found many different clothing stores that weren’t found in Canada. When I got back home, I was very upset that Canada wasn’t as fashion forward as England was, so I went online and “Googled” my favourite shop I found in England. Turns out they had any online store and also shipped world-wide. I was so excited about it that I told my sister, who was kind enough to take my very own money, put it on her credit card, and order me clothes!
The car I wanted, but didn't get...

In conclusion, the internet plays a very important role in the majority of the population’s life. Without the internet, our world today would be changed drastically. To me it seems almost un-functional. The internet is a great way to do things quicker and more efficient. It makes our world seem more connected and unified, and closer.

The Evolution of Communication!

Over the years communication has evolved and progressed in many ways. Every technology has been outdone by something new and better. It began with oral communication, and then progressed to writing messages in letters. From there, we went on to telegrams, newspapers, the radio and the telephone. As the years went on, the internet came into the picture, along with the invention of cellphones. We now have numerous ways of communicating with each other without even having to get out of our seats or even being in person; it’s all done through the various means of technology.

Our generation today, is very dependent on the use of cellphones. Almost everywhere I go, I see people either talking on the phone, texting or BBM-ing! I have even seen children as young as 8 or 9 holding around their very own cellphone. I was shocked to hear that my little cousin, who recently turned 10, received the new 9900 BlackBerry Bold for her birthday. I was actually more jealous of her than anything else because I, a 16-year-old, high school student still do not have a cellphone! I know, my life is sounding pretty sad right about now. In my opinion, there is no need for a cellphone for people under the age of 14. Cellphones are a great way of keeping in touch with family and friends. They are also a good way of quickly contacting anyone from almost anywhere. Cellphones appeal more to teenagers because of texting. Texting is an easy way of having conversations with each other without actually having to be in person and also a great way of staying connected. Texting even has its own language attached to it. Instead of having to type out a whole paragraph, you can easily shorten it with crazy acronyms and different emoticons. For example, lol: laughing out loud, brb: be right back, atm:  at the moment, omw: on my way, STHUG: shut the hell up guy, and even, habaeiwsotcwtat!- holding a banana and eating it while sitting on the couch watching television and tweeting! Okay, I made the last one up, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be long until we are all using it.

In addition to cellphones, the internet also plays a big role in the evolution of communication. Browsing the web allows people to quickly keep in touch with family, friends, and even people they don’t even necessarily know. With the internet comes numerous social networking websites such as, Facebook, MySpace, and the more recent ones, Google Plus, and Twitter. Using these websites can easily get you information about anyone and anything. You can also easily “Google” something and find various websites to give you all the information. These social networking websites are a great way of keeping in touch with family and friends, meeting new people, keeping up-to-date and even becoming famous. Youtube and Tumblr are a great of getting yourself out there and being noticed. The internet has almost no restrictions, not even distance. You can keep in touch with people over seas and maybe even from a different planet! Okay, maybe not a different planet, but when everyone has to move to Mars, I’m pretty sure I’ll still be tweeting about the red sidewalks. However, there is a negative to these websites. These website are an easy way of giving bullies a sense of power over their target. Since these people are hiding behind a computer screen, it makes it easier to type out hurtful and harmful things about a certain person. Another down side to the internet is that students can easily cheat on certain assignments by plagiarising someone else’s work. There are many things the internet has given us and I’m actually pretty excited to see what new innovations are to come.

To sum it all up, commination has come a long way since my mom and dad were teenagers. It really makes me wonder how they got through high school without the use of Google! It’s great to see that there really are no limitations to keep in contact with almost everyone from all over the world.  J

TRENDZ!

There are a lot of trends that most of us participate in and are effected by. A few weeks ago, Mr. Powles gave each student in my media class a survey on trends. The survey was to see how each and everyone in the class was affected by trends. After Mr. Powles compiled the results, he showed us what he found through a power point the next day. After the power point was presented, we came to the conclusion that everyone in the class follows at least one trend whether they knew it or not. I follow a couple of trends myself. Out of the 46 Mr. Powles listed, I follow 18, which is about 39%. Some of the trends I follow include Ugg boots, Nike, Drake, Lil Wayne, Skinny jeans, Track pants, Cardigans, Yoga Pants, Ripped jeans, Convers, High Top Shoes, Rap-music, Abercrombie & Fitch and Love Pink clothing. In my opinion, in order for someone to be considered “trendy” you simply have to follow at least 5 or 6 trends. By doing this, it shows that you are well aware of what is considered trendy and that you like to participate in what the latest trends are.
The most important trend that I follow and hold onto tightly is listening to Drake. He is one of my favourite artists and I simply love each and every one of his songs. I even have almost two whole walls completely covered by Drake posters, magazine covers, and pictures. I even own every single one of his albums and mix-tapes! I can honestly say that once you get me started on talking about Drake, it’s really hard for me to stop. At times, my sister and brother and even some of my friends get annoyed of me contently singing Drake songs, and refusing to sing any other. However, regardless of what some people say about Drake and my obsession with him, he actually means a lot to me. His songs have so much more than just a good beat or bass. To me, they actually have meaning and are so relatable. That’s one of the reasons why I love him so much!  On the other hand, a trend that I could easily let go of would be Convers because I don’t really wear them at all anymore. I actually only own one pair of shoes from there. I wasn’t even the one who bought them; my sister did for me as a Christmas present. I of course was really happy for a new pair of shoes, but I couldn’t really wear them a lot because of all the snow. Then as the spring and summer came around, I found myself buying different types of shoes like flats and high tops. So I actually never really wore them as much as I thought I would have.
The people that influence my sense of style and tatse would be my older sister and cousin, my best friend, and of course my favourite celebrities. The main person that influences my style more than anyone else would be my older sister, Sonya. She probably influenced me the most because as I was growing up, I constantly insisted on doing everything exactly like her. She was actually the one who first introduced me to Drake, and now I’m even more obsessed with him than her. Also, some of my favorite celebrities such as Megan Fox, Lucy Hale, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and many more all influence my style. I see them on different TV shows and events, and I really like to see what they are wearing because it gives me ideas to incorporate into my own outfits.
In conclusion, everyone follows at least one trend whether they know it or not. Trends are all around us and are simply a part of our society. Even though many people follow trends, it doesn't mean you have to allow trends to take over your own decision. As long as you do whatever it is that YOU want to do, then there really isn't anything wrong with following or not following trends.
