Women Portrayed in the Media

In the media today, women are portrayed in numerous ways. Some of the ways may be positive, while others can be negative. They range from different types of media such as television to magazines. They can be portrayed through different body types, food, fashion, and fame.

There are all types of women out there, but the media focus more on one particular type. This type being, the super skinny, pretty face, beautiful hair, nice clothes and amazing shoes. These types of women are usually found in all different types of fashion magazines. These magazines are mostly bought by teen girls who are probably very insecure. Seeing these types of girls all over magazines would put the thought in their mind, that if you want to be pretty like the girl in the magazine, you must look just like her! Unfortunately, most teen girls do not know that the girls in the magazine go through a large amount of photo editing and touch-ups to look like that. So basically, “the look” is unrealistic, fake and unattainable.

Similarly, there are so many shows in the media today that portray larger sized women as being ugly and un-attractive. They show them as being a loser and having no friends, and being the person everyone else likes to pick on. These types of shows are definitely sending the wrong message to all their viewers. I find it really mean and unfair that they portray larger women in that way. To some people, watching a show portraying women like that might make it seem like its okay for them to treat women in that way as well. I really don’t think the media should be putting out such a negative message about larger women out there like that.

On the other hand, in some television shows, they show a much more variety of all the different types of women. Like on New Girl, they portray the main character, Jess, as being a really pretty, shy, geeky and super funny girl. I find this show to be very amusing and entertaining. It shows a different and more realistic side of women to young girls. The main character is always her own self and doesn’t change anything about her. I think this show would catch the interest of most teen girls because it shows them that they don’t have to be like the girls they see in magazines. They can love and be their very own self.

In the media today, women can be seen as many different things. Some of which are negative, and some of which are positive. In my opinion, I think the more positive and realistic way women are portrayed should be the only way they are portrayed.
